Child Advocacy Center partners with FCPL for ‘Reading with Heiress"
Children and their caregivers are invited to meet Heiress, a 6-year-old yellow Labrador/Golden Retriever who supports children while they engage in services at Frederick County’s Child Advocacy Center.
As a certified Facility Dog, Heiress has been trained by Canine Companions to assist children who may have been victims of child maltreatment. Her handler is Kristen Dunn, a licensed clinical social worker and forensic interview specialist with the Frederick County Department of Social Services.
Heiress, Dunn and Robin Grove, director of the Child Advocacy Center, are relaunching the 2020 program that was paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. The team of experts will read “My Body! What I Say Goes!” and use engaging activities to help children learn proper terms for all parts of the body, recognize inappropriate touches, act on feeling uncomfortable with someone’s behavior, speak up if boundaries have been crossed, and build a support network.
